I mean what if you are a U.S. citizen but you get a driver's license from China. Can that driver's license from China be used in USA without having to take and pass the written or road tests in USA again? If you have to take the tests in the USA again, would the test contents be kind of similar to that of China's? Thanks.

According to our experience, most states using a Chinese driver's license if visiting the U.S. for a short stay with an English translation of the Chinese license.

Few states do not accept a Chinese driver's license but require foreign travelers to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) or International Driving License (IDL) in addition to a valid license from their own country. There are only a few states who enforce this rule, including:

  • Arkansas
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Jersey
  • Texas
  • Vermont

US Government

People who drive in the U.S. must have a valid driver's license. If you're a foreign visitor, some states require you to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) and a valid license from your own country. To find out the ID requirements of the U.S. state(s) where you will be driving, contact that state's motor vehicle department. https://www.usa.gov/motor-vehicle-services

Please contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state you plan to visit to make sure you can legally drive in that territory with a Chinese driver’s license. Alternatively, it’s possible to check directly with a car rental company in the state you are planning to visit.
